8.2 activity: planned Profile
Establishing a professional profile allows you to project your professional image, reflecting your professional identity. While this is one strategy for building a professional identity, it also enables you to engage in professional networking, access shared knowledge about the industry or specialty of interest, and find career opportunities. Moreover, a professional profile enables you to reflect on your achievements and identify strengths, areas for improvement, and gaps in knowledge or experience. While the professional profile reflects your growth and change, it can also assist you in career planning and establishing future goals.
LinkedIn is a valuable tool as the largest online professional network. If you haven’t already created one, SNHU’s Nursing Department encourages students to consider building a LinkedIn profile and maintaining it over time. You can continue to add your academic achievements throughout your MSN program to build your professional image before graduation. The Nursing Department also understands that privacy and online safety are important aspects of online networking. If you are not comfortable promoting your professional image publicly, consider creating your profile using private settings.
Prompt
Create your own working document that will evolve over time of content you can populate in an online professional profile, such as LinkedIn. This should include thoughtful considerations of the achievements of your scholarly work throughout the MSN program and reflect your professional identity.
You will be asked to consider your future goals in this assignment. Do not be concerned if you are unsure of your future career path and goals. When completing this activity, consider the MSN professional nursing role you would likely assume after graduation based on your chosen track. Remember, this is a working document that will evolve over time, and you can make adjustments as needed to reflect your changing goals and achievements.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Professional Details: Outline your professional details to define your professional identity. Be sure to include the following content, which may be presented in bulleted list format.
Name
Education
Licenses
Certification
Special skills
Current and previous roles
Professional membership(s)
Professional Achievements: Explain your notable professional achievements. Begin describing your work experiences in a concise manner. Then highlight the work assignments or projects that you are proud of. Think about activities that you would want to emphasize to a future employer or when networking.
Academic Achievements: Explain your notable academic achievements. Consider your educational pathway, starting prior to your MSN program. Throughout your MSN program, you will have many opportunities to add completed coursework that reflects your ongoing learning to your list of academic achievements. Emphasize details of assignments you have completed and are proud of. If you are uncertain, you may wish to start by reviewing your previous project work.
Five-Year Plan: Describe a professional plan for the next five years. Think about where you would like to be five years from now. What is your long-term goal? As you determine your long-term goal, consider how education, career-long learning, licensure, or certification would support you.
Short-Term Goals: Discuss the steps you will take to achieve your short-term professional goals. Think about the five-year plan you have already discussed, and then identify at least two short-term goals that will help you achieve your long-term goal. As you determine what your goals may be, consider education, licensure, or certification.
