“The look”, “What does my headscarf mean to you?”, and “How are microaggressions like mosquitoes?” are all videos that highlight the harm of microaggressions, stereotyping, and unconscious bias. After watching these videos, I believe that I have a better understanding of discrimination and strategies to identify and prevent it in the workplace. Furthermore, these videos will help me better advocate for my patients and be more mindful in my practice.
P&G’s video “The look” is particularly impactful as it uses little words to show the impact of stereotyping (Ads of Brands, 2019). The video highlights the idea that stereotypes/discrimination can be seen through actions, not spoken word. I found this video to be surprising and upsetting. It also proves how harmful the impact of discrimination, even if subtle, can be on a person.
In her TED talk, Yasmin Abdel-Magied discusses the impact that stereotyping and unconscious bias can have on an individual (TED, 2015). As mentioned in the video, stereotyping can be related to dress, or people not holding “typical” expectations based on race, gender, ethnicity. The video also discusses unconscious bias, where people aren’t always aware that their actions are harmful. Therefore, it’s crucial that workplaces work on identifying and reducing discrimination related to bias. Bias can extend to the workplace, such as in pay gaps and in opportunities for career advancement, which extends to the healthcare field. This video has made me more aware of bias and discrimination in the workplace; it has helped me to identify potential sources of bias and unconscious bias, such as those listed prior. An increased awareness of sources of bias as a nurse helps me to better advocate for my patients by identifying and working to prevent both overt and subtle/unconscious sources of bias.
A video by Aldersgate Camp equates microaggressions to mosquito bites(Aldersgate Camp and Retreat, 2020). The frequency of bites varies from person to person, and the more mosquitoes bite, the more problematic it is for the victim. By comparing mosquito bites to microaggressions, this video is showing how even subtle comments can build overtime to develop harmful, even devastating effects on the recipient. This video has made me think about my own words and the comments of those around me. Furthermore, this video has made me more aware of how impactful our words and actions can be on others and their self esteem.
