Nurses have a duty of care to their patient’s ; they have to provide the best care for them. The care they provide has to take the patient’s cultural and religious beliefs into account “The word “culture” refers to integrated patterns of human behaviors, including norms, traditions, and values that affect the thinking and behavior of members of particular groups. Cultural competence describes the ability to effectively interact with people belonging to different cultures” (Writers, 2022, para.7). A nurse has to be respectful to all cultures and religions the patients practice, even if it interferes with their own values. To be able to offer care that is culturally competent, health care providers need a specific skill set. Knowledge, awareness of discrepancies, cultural sensitivity in communication, and a better grasp of the attitudes, beliefs, and cultures of various groups are all part of developing this skill set (RNAO, 2007).Nurses should be educated and trained on how to communicate with and understand different cultures. Nurses should be open-minded when dealing with different cultures, as it will help them provide better care for the patients. Indigenous people have their own cultural beliefs and values when it comes to the health system. Nurses have to be aware of how the indigenous people feel about the modern medicine practice; nurses have to be able to communicate with indigenous people and try to understand their traditional healing practices. When a health care provider is aware that Indigenous peoples may have particular customs, needs, or practices that affect their health and well-being, they can put this knowledge into practice by implementing small or symbolic gestures in their everyday care. The health care system has to provide nurses with the training they require on how to work efficiently with Indigenous people. Nurses should be able to make proper health care plans for the indigenous people; they should be able to communicate and work together so that the best care is provided. “Part of our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is to strengthen nurse’s awareness and competence of culturally safe and sensitive care. This includes integrating accountability that incorporates the Ontario Human Rights Code and recommendations in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report into our entry-level competencies and nursing practice standards and guidelines”(CNO,2022,para.3).A nurse has to learn and understand why their patients feel a certain way about the health care system and what their culture and religious beliefs are. Communicating on the same level and understanding one another’s concerns will help build a relationship between a nurse and patient. A nurse should be able to recognize and understand why indigenous people have different beliefs. A nurse should be able to take all cultural and personal values into consideration while providing the best care for their patients. Becoming aware of how culture influences individual behavior and thinking allows you to plan the best care for your patients. Awareness of the rules of interactions within a specific cultural group, such as communication patterns and customs, division of roles in the family unit, and spirituality, will help you better understand the attitudes of your patients.
