According to the United States’ 26th amendment, the right to vote is only eligible for those eighteen years and beyond. Furthermore, it includes teens anticipated to turn eighteen during the year. This means that even if they do not turn eighteen by the end of December, they will be allowed to register as voters but under the condition that they produce authentic certification that they will be of age in that particular year of voting. This is called preregistration. Claims are that automatic registration of voters would be the best way to increase the participation of voters in the U.S. If all states in the United States would pass and implement the legislation of automatic voter registration, the statistics being made on poor voter turnout and registration will be foregone. Therefore, in this discussion, a dissertation is done on the problems associated with voter registration in the United States, the need for automatic voter registration when one reaches the age of 18, and the benefits associated with automatic voter registration.

Problems Associated with Voter Registration in the U.S.

Poor turnout for registration has become a prominent issue for voter registration in the United States and has been the subject of much debate. Though eligible to vote, many Americans need help registering, putting them at a disadvantage in elections. Unfortunately, this leads to high disenfranchisement rates that remain a common problem for American voters. Not only does this cause obstacles for marginalized communities and individuals less likely to participate in the democratic process, but it also contributes to low turnout among eligible voters. This is because young people are more likely than older Americans to be either unregistered or unregistered. Moreover, due to poor turnout for registration, voting fraud is rampant in the U.S. (Minnis, 2020, p.4). The problem stems from a need for all citizens to be registered to vote as soon as they turn 18. If we could register every citizen at 18 and then track them throughout their life, we would be able to detect any voter fraud immediately and prevent it from happening.

Exclusion of some ethnic groups in the US in the voting process because of not being registered. An example is the Latinos and Asian Americans, with whom only slightly over half were registered as potential voters in the previous federal elections. Voter registration plays an imperative role in the democracy of the people of the United States. Hence, when some group in the nation does not participate in voter registration due to potential hindrances, the country needs to catch up regarding its political affinity (McGhee, 2019, p.13). Not all rights of the people will be met. A modernized voter registration system is needed to escalate this situation, as some people become barred from registration due to misplacement of documentation when registering. American Latinos and Asian Americans, among the minority groups in the United States, have succumbed to this issue. Also, at times the disabled might be unable to get to voter registration points due to distance, alongside other problems they might face (National Constitution Center, 2021, p.3). It is the right of all people in the US to exercise their voting rights. Therefore, a better mechanism, such as automatic voter registration when a person comes of age, should be implemented to reduce such inconveniences.

Need for Automatic Voter Registration.

An automatic voter registration mechanism should be implemented to reduce voter apathy. Voter apathy can be described as voters’ lack of interest in electing a representative for their democracies during elections. This kind of state is usually felt by citizens when the number of those engaging in the election process does not meet the anticipated population eligible to vote (The Daily, 2019, p.3). This usually portrays the election results as clear and invalid in layman’s language. With automatic voter registration, such a state will be deciphered, allowing a higher voter participation rate nationwide. Also, automatic voter registration is required to propel voter participation. With such a system, voter registration fatigue will be handled, and results acquired during elections will be more consistent and encamp the US population. Furthermore, voter fatigue can be reduced by automatic voter registration as people will be exposed to deciding whether to register as a voter. The system will register them automatically immediately after they come of age.

Benefits of Automatic Voter Registration in the U.S

Automatic voter registration would ensure that all eligible voters can vote. The voter registration systems of the United States are outdated and bring about mistrust in their capability to hold people’s data. With the automated system, the details of initially registered voters can easily be updated as those who turn eighteen are also automatically registered. Furthermore, unlike the previous voter system, automatic voter registration offers people the opt-out option. This relays the democratic process of the US, as people are not being forced into exercising their democratic rights (Brennan Center, 2023, p.3). The system clarifies that it is a citizen’s choice to be automatically registered.

Another benefit of using an automatic voter registration system for US citizens once they turn 18 is allowing all citizens to exercise their patriotic right to vote without limitations. This is because AVR is a system gaining greater momentum in almost all the states in the United States. Therefore, it is gaining recognition that most people find convenient and adherable. Moreover, the fact that AVR can be easily accessed online by voters (who can check their voter registration status and update on information that might have been left out) makes it the most convenient system to handle US’s poor voter registration turnout. Lastly, less time is spent registering through the AVR (Brennan Center, 2023, p.4). No cumbersome activities are engaged by the person intending to register, as everything is done online.
