IHI reflection discussion about what you learned from the IHI tutorials.  You may use any of the  IHI tutorials you have completed. Discuss how you can apply it to your everyday work. How does this relate to the course learning outcomes?

This week’s IHI tutorial was about leadership; anybody can be a leader. However, it takes a lot to be a successful and good leader. One of the things that I learned from that lesson is patience, the ability to listen to others’ opinions,  emotional intelligence, and, most of all, knowing how to communicate can lead a team to success. In a group or organization, especially in the medical field, we may not have the same way of doing things, but we all have the same goal: the client’s well-being. Therefore the leader must keep the team focused and guide them to the initial goal. The unit where I work is hectic, so as a team member, I  can act as a leader by communicating more with my coworkers. Instead of complaining, I will share ideas of how we can change things and also promote teamwork which is what we need to provide safe, quality care because “we lead when we organize a group of colleagues to address an organizational problem” (Yoder-Wise, 2023, p 496). Incorporating this attitude into my work ethic will help me achieve one of the course outcomes, which is: “Evaluate leadership theories and concepts to improve staff satisfaction and promote the delivery of quality and safe patient care.

Chapter 4 (6th Ed) – Developing Role of Manager – Chapter 29 (7th Ed)

Discuss the impact the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) has on managing resources. What are some of the controversies that arise from this application and usage? What changes do the Affordable Care Act make for patients: good and bad?

The PPACA has significantly changed how resources are managed and how health care is delivered and paid for in the US. For many people, it has made health insurance more inexpensive and accessible, and it has inspired providers to implement cost-cutting measures. The PPACA, however, has also generated a lot of controversies and does not address the root causes of increasing healthcare prices. While the Affordable Care Act is enabling people to have access to care at low cost, some are still complaining about the increasing price of medications which affects the quality of care.

Chapter 17 (6th Ed) -LEADING Change – Chapter 18 (7th Ed)

Discuss examples of internal and external factors that impact an organization and its ability to change.

Changes are never easy to accept; to make changes, we need to be assertive and able to influence others. In an organization, internal and external factors can affect its ability to change. Let’s take an example of the internal factor; where I work, we used to have a problem with not having the medications sent on time by the pharmacy, which caused a delay in treatment, which created frustration. Another internal problem is the need for more staffing and workload. If we need to give quality care, we need more nurses and the resources ready. An external factor example is “disease and the lifestyle patterns in the community population and the reimbursement” (Yoder-Wise p. 322). All these can affect the ability of an organization to change because if we don’t fix the problem of why a patient cannot have medication on time.
