Scenario
Joan is a lady you support 3 times a week in her home. She has recently lost her husband after a long battle with cancer several months ago. He deteriorated very quickly and even though she knows he is now not suffering she still feels like a huge part of her has been torn away. She is showing signs that she is having difficulty coping with her grief and trauma. She has periods when she feels intense sorrow and sadness, and this can last for weeks.
After Joan’s husband died, she found she could no longer manage the home. She does have her own mobility issues and her arthritis has worsened since her husband died. She now realises that the family home where she and her husband had lived for the last 50 years needs to be sold so that she can enter a supported residential living environment.
Joan also has a small poodle called Burt who is now 13 years old and an integral part of her life. With her increasing mobility issues and arthritis and having to sell her house she knows she may have to find somewhere else for Burt to live. Her nephew who lives 2 hours by care away has offered to take Burt.
Over the last couple of weeks, you have observed that Joan is showing signs that she is having difficulty coping with her grief and trauma. She has periods when she feels intense sorrow and sadness, and this can last for weeks.
Everything seems to have piled up on Joan and Joan has started to make comments that she has lived a long life, and she appears preoccupied with death. She has already planned her funeral and has been giving away a lot of the belongings that she and her husband had collected over the years.
At your visit today you are tidying the house for her and notice two bottles of sleeping pills on her bedside table. You check Joan’s care plan and there is no mention of a new medication.
