I have selected the importance of having infants room-in during the first 24 hours to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates. I feel that educating new mothers can be beneficial in increasing the rates of infants rooming in and exclusive breastfeeding.
Briefly describe your rationale for your topic selection. Include the scope of the issue/problem.
The breastfeeding rates in the U.S are low in the first six months of life and continues to decrease to one year following birth. I feel that lack of patient education may be the reason to the decrease numbers, among other things. My personal experience as a postpartum nurse is that many mothers request that staff care for the infant. Due to lack of sleep deprivation, mothers often ask nursing staff to provide the infant with a bottle rather than take the time to breast feed.

In new mothers in postpartum unit aging from 18-40, does 24-hour rooming in with infant compared to mothers who have postpartum nurses care for their infants increase the rates of exclusive breastfeeding outcomes and rates 3-6 months post discharge from postpartum unit?
