Task 3 Painted a service user nails and they didn’t like it and I has been shouted at
What skills, behaviours and attributes did I demonstrate while carrying out this task?
The skills I demonstrated in this task was communication as when I started painting the nails, I asked the service user if she likes it and they shouted that they didn’t. I calmed myself down by doing it again and involved them in the decision making as in I involved the service user what colour they prefer and how they want it. Shared decision-making ensures that individuals are supported to make decisions that are right for them. (NHS choices 2023: online)
Also, I Remained calm when I was shouted at as I didn’t take it personal, I have seen similar situation happening to staff which they calm their selves down and continue with the task they are doing. Nail polishes is a household hazardous trash due to its chemical makeup and should be disposed of properly and kept it away from residence as a service can take it and can be harmful to the body.
Employers are required under COSHH to control substances that are harmful to their employees’ health. Hazardous substance exposure can be avoided or minimised for employees. (Health and Safety executive)

What feedback did I receive?
The feedback I got from my manager after reading the documentation I did was how patience I was and did not react to anything and listened to the service user, also engaged them on which colour as I gave the service user the choice to choose which colour, they prefer, and the service user told me how nice I painted the nails and how pretty they look.

What went well?
Correcting myself and engaged them in the decision making and the service user was happy at the end of the task. Also, I gave the service user choices and communicated properly which made the task easy and to the likeable of the service user.

Which factors may have influenced my performance?
I was unsure of what to do because it was my first time painting a service user nails and I was anxious. As a result, I didn’t consult them about the colours or ask how they wanted it done. It was also my first time conducting an activity with the service user, so there wasn’t much of a relationship.

How did work shadowing or observing others complete the task help my performance?
Work shadowing helped me complete this task as I saw how some of the residence get agitated and irritated and how they end up shouting at the staff and how the staff reacts to it. Also, observation helped me complete this performance as have observed how staff manages situation like this and not taking it personal but rather communicate well with the service user and correct their mistakes.

How can I improve?
Ask for feedback from my supervisor as which part I need to work on and get to know the service user preferences and properly by building a relationship with them which I can start any activity or task with them positively.

Have painted other services user nails and I always provide two choices of nail colour. I try to remember their favourites to make them feel special. I have observed and improved that the service user liked to tell you how they want their things to be done and communicating properly with them will help and also having a good relationship with the service user makes them engage more and comfortable.
