Task 1  A service user started having a seizure which lasted more…

Task 1

A service user started having a seizure which lasted more than 5 minutes, I notified the line manager which she immediately phoned 111 and they directed us to the ambulance.

What skills, behaviours and attributes did I demonstrate while carrying out this task?

Observation abilities focus on understanding your surroundings, the communication processes that demand your participation, and the people who perform activities that may affect you. (Job search UK | indeed 2023: online).

I used observational skills in this situation to identify when the service user had begun to have a seizure. I knew that I needed to keep track of how long the service user was unconscious for. I needed to be able to multitask and remain calm by watching clearly to determine how long it lasted and what transpired during that time and then report it to the manager and the 111 operators, thus this was a crucial ability.

Another crucial ability was communication, as I had to do with the line manager because the seizure lasted longer than five minutes and we needed to call the ambulance. I was able to describe what took place at the time and kept detailed records of everything.

Follow instructions from the 111 operators to place the patient their side to clear their airways. I have used the skill of turning a patient before during manual handling training and during activities such as changing bed sheets.

How did work shadowing or observing others complete the task help my performance?

Work shadowing and observation has supported me when on a work placement. It has provided me the opportunity to first observe professionals at work. This helps me work more productively and better, understanding my role and what is expected of me. Through observing many professionals, I was able to observe how well they connect with the elderly and how the service users respond so that I could learn from the positive elements I had observed of those.

I have benefited from watching how specific staff members carry out procedures because it allows me to see how they should be done successfully and how I may contribute thoughts that would enhance the issue. And finally, by studying how seasoned experts handle problems and deal with difficult situations, I can develop my own skills.

work shadowing was helpful to me in this circumstance because I was able to see how other staff monitored a service user who was having a seizure and the precautions, they took to make sure they were away from potential hazards which they can hit their heads on or things that could injure them.

Work shadowing- how you have- watching, recording, listening, asking questions, confidence building, relationships with others

How can you improve-? Taking notes, research skills, one to one, confidence, perseverance, constructive feedback

How can I improve?

Not needing to be prompted to place the service user in the recovery position and, I could have called the ambulance myself instead of calling the line manager.

Observed improvements (if task is being repeated)

Some improvement that I have made since the first day I started my placement is having relationship with the service users as I can do fun activities with them, and the residence have more confidence in me as they will not be afraid if am supporting them.

The service user has had several seizures that has only lasted for 3 minute, so I do not require me to call the ambulance but documented it. I have also observed and improve on what need to be done when seen a service user having a seizure as I need to support them gently and cushion their head.
